A Weather Window
Twelve stories. Dockhands, night nurses, a woman who names snook, and a radio that only works on outgoing water.
There is a window, some mornings, when the wind has not read the forecast yet. Captains call it a weather window and treat it like a rumor they are lucky to have overheard. You put the boat in. You do not announce it. You come home before the rumor is corrected.
In the third story a night nurse on Davis Islands feeds a heron named after her ex and does not find this symbolic. In the seventh, a dockhand finds a wedding ring in a tarpon's mouth and spends a year trying to give it back to the right hand. In the last, the radio on Johny's dash plays a song that has not been written, and he writes it down on the back of a fuel receipt because that is how the job works.
